Natural Diasaters and Emergency Relief

After the events of the past few weeks it becomes obvious that we as a world must do more for disaster relief. We must face reality. After Katrina; after the recent flood in Pakistan; after the mudslide in The People’s Republic of China; after the earthquakes in Haiti and Pakistan; and the Tsunami in Southern Asia, we as a world must find a new way of handling disasters and funding the relief of those who are affected. The last minute, pass the hat, depend on the local resources, approach no longer works. In Pakistan over twenty million people were affected. The disaster was so great that the Pakistan government was forced to resort to beating people with sticks in an effort to distribute the food and necessary supplies. A whole area of a nation was affected. This is no small nation but one that has nuclear weapons. The army came to the rescue of the people. However, it was not enough. What we did not do when the U.N. was first organized was give it sufficient funds or fundraising power to organize a continuous relief effort. If this were done, whenever a disaster struck there would be immediate medical, food and other necessities supplied immediately to victims. Natural disasters do not have a nationality nor do they have borders. They don’t have political ideologies. The saddest situation was that, during the flood of Katrina, Cuba was refused entry into the United States when the people of New Orleans clearly needed the assistance. People drowned because of this. How much can you hate Fidel Castro and communism? It doesn’t make much sense. Haiti, according to, the Cuban newspaper Grandma, still looks like it did the day after the earthquake. The place resembles a nation that had undergone an aerial bombing. The Cubans are there providing aid but what has happened to the money promised from other nations? What happens when the available donations are drained because of the flood in Pakistan? The People’s Republic of China cannot come to either nation’s aid because she has endured a mudslide that has cost the lives of over 1200 people of her own populace. Surely it would make sense to build some type of worldwide supply center to supply emergency relief for victims of natural disasters. Clearly being a world power does not provide immunity from disaster. Humanity needs the assistance. Humanity need to be more humane.
